This Actually Happened – November 4th, 2011

Awkward Isn’t The Word

Due to my decision to attend the Thursday night game at Boston College, I will post the next episode of Bagging Up, tomorrow. For today’s post, I’ll write this week’s entry for This Actually happened! As is customary, names have been changed! (Famous Cape Verdean singers will replace the real people!) This incident occurred at the store, in 2009. I walked in and found my little cousin, Susana, talking with her cousin, Jorge Neto and his guardian, Zeca di Nha Reinalda. I shook Zeca’s hand, and then shook Jorge’s hand. Jorge lives in Cape Verde; I met him during his first visit to the US, in 2007. My cousin Susana lives in Florida and she was visiting for the summer. I placed my arm around Susana’s shoulders and shot the breeze with Jorge. Zeca asked me if I knew Jorge, which I found to be a weird question because Jorge hung out with us all the time, during his last visit. Before continuing the conversation, I replied, “Yeah, of course!” I then asked Jorge how long he planned on staying in America and his reply shocked me! He said, “My wife is leaving at the beginning of November and I will return a few weeks after.” I turned slowly to look at my cousin Susana, and thought to myself, “there is no way this was happening!” Clear as day, I had my arm around a complete stranger. For about five minutes, my adulterous appendage was around the neck of Jorge’s lovely wife; I was mortified. I apologized for my inappropriate behavior and explained to Jorge’s wife that I thought she was my cousin Susana. I quickly removed myself from the situation and was only comforted by the fact that I knew the incident would turn into a humorous tale, one day. If there is one question that I would love to ask, it would be to Jorge’s wife. I want to know what she was thinking. She probably thought, “America is a crazy land; the men just walk up and put their arms around you without even saying hello.” One day, I will find out the answer to that question! BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

I think my idea for the next episode deserves more attention than I was willing to dedicate to the blog, today, which is why I made the switch.

I’m also participating in National Novel Writing Month, and I am about a thousand words off the pace. I’m hoping to make-up some of the slack during my flight to LA next week.

Good luck to me!

First and foremost, I enjoy writing stories. I recently completed my first novel, and I successfully co-wrote a short film script, which won the grand prize in the words made easy competition.
